Supporting the Success of All Students: Broadening Participation of Underrepresented Groups in the Geosciences

Tuesday, 12 December 2017 - 09:00 - 12:00

American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting, New Orleans, Louisiana

Morial Convention Center New Orleans (MCCNO), Third Floor, Room 338-339

Enrollment through AGU annual meeting registration is required. AGU workshop registration is closed as this workshop is full. We ask all those who have enrolled in the workshop through AGU to now complete a short NAGT registration.

This workshop offers strategies for attracting a diverse population to geosciences and for strengthening support for all students, particularly those underrepresented in the sciences. We will discuss questions related to the importance of diversity within the student population and the outwardly apparent lack of interest and high attrition for students from minority groups. In addition to sharing some of the challenges students face and the barriers they find along their path towards achieving academic and career goals, we will explore a range of approaches that can be taken to broaden participation and foster inclusion. Workshop participants will leave with specific practical strategies to implement in their classes, as well as with examples of success and discussion points to bring back to their departments.

Workshop conveners: Rachel Beane (Bowdoin College), Sue Ebanks (Savannah State University), Heather Macdonald (College of William & Mary), and Gary Weissmann (University of New Mexico)

This workshop is a partnership between AGU and the National Association of Geoscience Teachers.
