NAGT: Earth education for all

The National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) is committed to recognizing and celebrating the outstanding contributions of geoscience educators and students. We're reaching out today to encourage you to nominate your deserving colleagues and/or students to receive this recognition!

NAGT's awards highlight excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service within the Earth Science education community. They offer a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the hard work, dedication, and impact of individuals who are shaping the future of education and our students.

Association Awards

Stimulation of Interest in the Earth Sciences: Neil Miner Award

The Neil Miner Award recognizes individuals for exceptional contributions to the stimulation of interest in the Earth sciences.

Excellence in Earth Science Writing and Editing: James H. Shea Award

The James Shea Award recognizes individuals for exceptional contributions in the form of writing or editing of Earth science materials (broadly construed) that are of interest to the general public and/or teachers of Earth Science.

Excellence in JEDI Award

The Excellence in Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Award recognizes individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to JEDI in geoscience.

Distinguished Service: Robert Christman Award

The Robert Christman Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals who have provided long, distinguished service to the Association at the national and/or section level. The Christman Award has a rolling deadline, but nominations by April 15 are encouraged so that the awardee can be recognized at the annual awards ceremony.

Grants & Stipends

Dorothy Stout Professional Development Grants

These grants (named in honor of NAGT's first female president, Dorothy "Dottie" Stout) are awarded to faculty and students at two-year colleges and K-12 teachers in support of: participation in Earth science classes or workshops; attendance at professional scientific or science education meetings; participation in Earth science field trips; or purchase of Earth science materials for classroom use.

Career Prep Workshop Grants (for Graduate Students)

Thanks to generous donations from NAGT members and donors, a fund was established to support students attending the Preparing for an Academic Career workshop being held in person at Earth Educators' Rendezvous. Graduate students and post-docs interested in academic careers are encouraged to attend.

Earth Educators' Rendezvous Travel Stipend

If your institution has limited resources to support your participation in the Earth Educators' Rendezvous, you may be eligible for assistance from our workshop fund.

JGE Awards - nominate by June 15

Outstanding Paper Award

The Outstanding Paper Award recognizes a paper that exhibits one or more of the following characteristics: (1) innovative enhancement of student learning, which is documented and assessed, (2) advancement of the discipline of geoscience education, and (3) broad societal impact of vital and significant high quality geoscience education.

Outstanding Reviewer Award

The Outstanding Reviewer Award recognizes a reviewer who (1) provides reviews of exceptional quality, (2) completes reviews more quickly than average, and/or (3) completes more reviews than average.

Student Awards - nominate by June 15

Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award

The Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award recognizes undergraduate and graduate students for their work as teaching assistants. Up to 30 awards are given annually.
