Academic Prep Award
Thanks to generous donations from NAGT members and donors, a Student Career Preparation Fund was established to support students attending the Preparing for an Academic Career workshop. Recognizing that preparing future educators is a crucial endeavor, this award is intended to help graduate students attend this workshop, with the aim of attaining workshop goals, including learning about:
- academic careers in different educational settings in order to help chart their career path
- the job search process, and how to strengthen their application, interview, CV, and communication skills
- how to craft research and teaching statements
- how to design effective lessons and find educational resources tailored for the Geosciences, and
- how to advance their research program.
In addition, the Earth Educators' Rendezvous includes many workshops and events that will be of interest for those preparing for an academic career in the geosciences. Notably, the conference is an opportunity to meet with scientists from around the country, and those interactions can help build a sense of connection to the larger community.
Award recipients are required to attend the entire workshop and give a presentation at their home institution about their experience and report that activity to NAGT.
Criteria for selection will start with first time graduate student applicants and those that show a demonstrated need on a first-come first-served basis. Ten stipends of $175 each are available for the 2020 workshop. Apply by June 1.
Monetary awards will be disbursed following the workshop. In order to receive the award, recipients are required to register for the Rendezvous and complete the entire workshop and give a presentation at their home institution about their experience and report that activity to NAGT. Once the report is received, awards will be disbursed.
For those applying for additional monetary support to attend the Earth Educators' Rendezvous, the limit on the combined award from Earth Educators' Rendezvous/NAGT sources (e.g. participation in review camp, travel stipends, etc.) is $500.
Please complete the application form to apply for a stipend. Applications are due by June 1, 2020, and awardees will be notified by mid June, 2020.
