Description
We depart from San Angelo in West Texas for four big geologic mapping projects in Big Bend Ranch State Park, northern New Mexico, and western Nevada. We will map diverse rock types and structures as we make a transect across the North American Cordillera, including the active Rio Grande Rift and Walker Lane. Our field camp emphasizes the challenge and fun of solving geological puzzles while by describing rock types, making geologic maps, constructing cross-sections, and measuring structures. For fun and education, we will climb Emory Peak in Big Bend National Park, Guadalupe Peak, the tallest peak in Texas, and Sand Mountain, a singing dune in western Nevada. We will stay in cabins, dorm rooms, a small motel, as well as camp out fifteen nights. Faculty include ASU graduates now working as environmental and petroleum geologists. We seek four more students to join our nine Angelo State students to embark on our fifth field camp.
