Don't forget to stop by our booth (#457) in the exhibit hall to learn about recent NAGT activities, sponsored projects, connect with other NAGT members and staff working the booth, and check out our NAGT swag!

Seeking Volunteers for the NAGT Booth at GSA

We are actively soliciting NAGT members to help staff the booth during the GSA meeting in Denver. The vendors area will open at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 25th and there are opportunities to volunteer each day until the showcase closes at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 28th.

This is a great way to meet other NAGT members from around the country and share your excitement about geoscience education. Your commitment and enthusiasm is really critical to helping bring new members on board. If you've never volunteered at the booth before, it's so easy! And there will be experienced NAGT officers and staff on hand so newbies won't be thrown in the deep end.

If you have even a little time you can give to representing NAGT, please contact Krista Herbstrith (kherbstr at carleton.edu) in the Executive Director's Office and she can get you on the schedule.

2. In The Trenches Seeks an editor-in-Chief

NAGT is seeking an individual to serve as the next Editor-in-Chief for In The Trenches (ITT), a quarterly NAGT publication. ITT is practitioner-oriented and features short articles that share stories, teaching, ideas, resources, NAGT activities, and news related to teaching geoscience at all levels, from K-16.

In the Trenches provides a venue for contributors to inform NAGT members about their best teaching ideas, resources, and special topics relevant to our profession and offers a more informal outlet for innovative ideas and experiences that can inform the larger community.

8. Earth Educators' Rendezvous Report

NAGT organized a very successful 2nd annual Earth Educators' Rendezvous in Madison, Wisconsin in July. Approximately 330 educators from across the country and a variety of institution types came together to capitalize on the experience of colleagues in a wide range of fields and to network with others engaged in improving undergraduate Earth education. Events included workshops, teaching demonstrations, panel discussions, oral and poster sessions, plenary talks, working groups, and a concluding Town Hall forum. The meeting engaged participants in activities that support faculty in improving their courses, departments, or programs with the aim of increasing their overall impact of Earth education. The meeting also endeavored to build a collective capacity to use and conduct education research.

To learn more about the Rendezvous, visit the program website which also includes a slideshow of the event. Save the date for the 2017 Rendezvous, July 17-21 in Albuquerque, NM.

9. InTeGrate is Pleased to Announce the Publication of New Teaching Materials

Mapping the Environment with Sensory Perception

Mapping the Environment with Sensory Perception connects students' personal sensory experiences to environmental data collected and analyzed by geoscientists, cultural impacts documented by social scientists, and the communication of environmental conditions and advocacy for remedial action crafted by rhetoricians. Sensory data (specifically smells and sounds) will be collected and used to trace the movement of contaminants through the environmental system. While geoscientists may ultimately rely upon chemical analyses of water, soil, and air samples, the initial impact of contamination is most often noted when people detect sensorial alterations of their lived spaces.

Developed by Kate Darby (Western Washington University), Lisa Phillips (Illinois State University), and Mike Phillips (Illinois Valley Community College), this 2-3 week teaching module helps students develop an understanding of how contaminants move through the natural environment; how data is collected to identify contaminants, monitor movement, and identify sources; and how individuals living in proximity to environmental hazards are directly impacted by those hazards. Mapping the Environment with Sensory Perception is a great fit for courses in introductory geoscience, environmental science, environmental justice, and environmental studies.

Carbon, Climate, and Energy Resources

Carbon, Climate, and Energy Resources focuses on fostering a deeper understanding of the carbon cycle and what happens when it is perturbed. Students will develop their critical thinking skills, explore the dynamics of Earth's carbon cycle through biogeochemistry and the perspective of "deep time," and learn how carbon was sequestered to produce traditional and nontraditional fossil fuels.

Developed by Callan Bentley (Northern Virginia Community College), Pete Berquist (Thomas Nelson Community College), and Pamela Gore (Perimeter College, Georgia State University), this 2-3 week teaching module allows students to make connections between climate change, energy sources, and the moral, societal, and economic costs of policy options. Carbon, Climate, and Energy Resources is a great fit for courses in physical geology, historical geology, or environmental geology.

Visit the InTeGrate website to view these and other published InTeGrate modules.

12. Annual Women Deans and Chairs at GSA

The Association for Women Geoscientists (AWG) will be offering another Issues Facing Women Chairs, Deans, and Other Academic Leaders session this year at GSA. It will be on Monday September 26 from 5:00-6:30 in Mile High Ballroom 1F of the Colorado Convention Center.

For those of you new to this list, this is an informal group that meets each year at GSA and includes those interested in issues facing women chairs, deans, and other academic leaders (construed broadly). We welcome all who are interested in these issues. Snacks are served! We'll start with some opening remarks and then get going on some directed small group discussions. We've had good discussions over the years on a variety of topics and the session has been an opportunity to network with a variety of academic leaders at a variety of career stages.

If you know of others who would be interested in attending, please share this announcement with them and encourage them to come to the session (and then let us know so we can add them to the list).

Support for these meetings comes from the AWG Foundation and NAGT.
