Description

Our summer geology field camp is designed to expose students to a wide variety of rock types and geologic settings. Projects examine various aspects of the contractional and extensional tectonic history of the North American Cordillera and include work on intrusive/volcanic, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, as well as Quaternary landscapes and deposits. We spend the first week on the road in the Black Hills/Badlands, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Tetons National Park, and the Uinta Mountains. We then base ourselves in Park City, Utah, from which we travel to other areas of Utah (Capitol Reef National Park), Nevada (Great Basin National Park), and Wyoming. Field trips take advantage of geologic points of interest that include, but are not limited to Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, the Great Salt Lake, and Bingham Copper Mine.

Other Important Information

The field camp is based in Park City, Utah, a town with a population of ~8,000 located in the Wasatch Mountains to the east of Salt Lake City at an elevation of ~7,000 feet above mean sea level. While in Park City, we will reside in condominiums equipped with a full kitchen, bathrooms, laundry machines, and cable television. Each condominium houses up to 4 students with two students per bedroom. The condominiums have all of the basics including dinnerware, linens, and towels. Students are responsible for cleaning the condominiums, towels, and bed linens. Food is bought and prepared by the individual or in small groups. Students have to leave and return with the vehicle caravan from and to Oshkosh.

We will also take camping trips to various locations in central Utah and eastern Nevada. While away from Park City, we will camp in tents. Students need to bring their personal tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and dinnerware for camping. Cooking gear (stoves, pots, and pans) is provided by the department.
