Description
This class gets you out of the classroom to see some large-scale geology! First, we'll explore northern New Mexico to investigate the Rocky Mountains and Rio Grande Rift and do some rigorous and enlightening mapping projects. We'll investigate igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock units and interpret large field areas and structures. Next, we'll depart Taos on a road trip to explore the geologic history of one of the most visually stunning natural regions on Earth. The Colorado Plateau has dramatic erosional features and exposures of Proterozoic, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic rocks. The Colorado Plateau's relative tectonic stability (when compared with the rest of the western U.S.), uplift, and dissection by the Colorado River and its tributaries allow us to see more pages in the "book of geologic time" than almost anywhere else on Earth.
