Introductory Field Geology and Geology Field Camp
Hosted by: Santa Barbara City College
June 19, 2023 - August 2, 2023

Description
Students learn basic field geology skills, including using the Brunton compass, plotting strikes and dips on a map, drafting geologic maps, measuring stratigraphic section and drafting stratigraphic columns, taking professional quality field notes, and drafting geologic reports. Instruction in the second 3-week field course builds on these skills and adds mapping the tectonic geomorphology of the San Andreas Fault zone, creating a topographic map, and constructing a detailed photo-map of a high grade metamorphic outcrop. The first 3-week course has a capstone project mapping for four days in the Little Poleta Folds, eastern California; the capstone experience for the second 3-week course is a five-day mapping project in the Cuyama Badlands (also in California).
Credits
4.5 units each (total = 9 for six weeks of field camp)

Other Important Information
Students will be expected to be able to identify and interpret representatives of the three main rock types that are typically taught in a physical geology lab. Outside of that, all field skills are taught from the ground up.
Students can opt to take only the first 3-week course (ends July 11), but if they want to take the second, they must take the first as a prerequisite.
Students will be responsible for their own housing during the first two weeks of the 1st 3-week course. The field course organizers are looking into arranging a housing option (camping or local apartments), but there will be an additional charge for it.
