Description
The purpose of the course is to examine and map a wide variety of rocks, including Precambrian and Tertiary crystalline rocks as well as Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks, and Quaternary sediments. Students will be directed in the techniques of section measurement, compass traverse, and mapping on topographic maps, as well as field analysis of soils, surface hydrology, and water quality. Computer mapping tools and GPS are used to prepare some maps. Structural and stratigraphic analysis will be included in many projects. The field camp is based in the Black Hills, but a 6-8 day trip is made to Wyoming and Montana to describe and map structural and stratigraphic features of the Big Horn, Absaroka, and Beartooth mountains.
