Workshop Overview

The overall goal of this workshop is to bring together a community of geoscientist colleagues and peers to build mentorship skills based on principles that support the success of all students. In this 3-part workshop series, we will explore how we can develop and effectively serve as mentors and support the growth of excellent scientists.
Goals
Through this interactive and hands-on, virtual workshop, participants will:
- Recognize the relationship and dynamics between mentors and mentees
- Develop strategies to establish expectations and communication with mentees
- Foster independence through Individual Development Plans and set up mentoring networks
- Work together to explore and address mentoring challenges
Workshop Sessions Descriptions:
Session I: Mentor and Mentee Relationships – two-hours, virtual (April 29)
- Reflect on our own paths as mentees
- Explore the impacts of mentoring
- Understand the relationships and dynamics between mentors and mentees
Session II: Expectations and Communication - two-hours, virtual (May 6)
- Learn strategies to assess and enhance mentee understanding of core concepts
- Establish expectations and maintain effective communication
- Case studies to practice working through interactions and scenarios
Session III: Fostering Independence - two-hours, virtual (May 13)
- Define mentee independence, build their confidence, and foster their agency
- Explore the use of Individual Development Plans and setting up mentoring networks

- Tuesdays in April (29) and May (6 and 13)
- 10am - 12pm PT | 11am - 1pm MT | 12pm - 2pm CT | 1pm - 3pm ET

Please note: Once you submit your registration and payment, arrangements will be made that have associated real costs even if you later withdraw from the workshop. Refunds will not be given except in cases of extreme personal hardship, at the discretion of the workshop leaders.
Expectations
By registering for and participating in the workshop, participants agree to do the following:
- Prepare in advance for the workshop via readings, writings, discussion, or other activities as requested by the workshop leaders.
- Participate fully in the entire workshop and attend all workshop sessions. Participants may be invited to make presentations or serve as discussion or working group leaders at the workshop.
