Course Summary Portfolio
Initial Publication Date: December 31, 2016
Summary
In portfolio students are to complete the portfolio by summarizing important features of various types of functions we study throughout the course in their own words as well as providing examples of graphs, equations, and applications.
Learning Goals
They will organize the content and synthesize information provided throughout the course in their own words. They will need to be able to explain clearly and present their ideas in logical fashion. Comprehensive presentations of important concepts as well as the organization of the content are also considered for the overall score for this assignment. In order to "motivate" students to take the portfolio assignment seriously, one part of the final is directly related to this major assignment.
Context for Use
In lieu of giving major exams throughout the quarter, I restructured the ways my students are assessed in precalculus. Instead of major exams, they are given weekly quizzes. They still need to take cumulative final exam, but part of the final is coming from the content of the portfolio assignment. My hope is that by completing this portfolio, students' understanding of different types of functions are solidified, and hence they are better prepared for calculus sequence many of them will be taking in the future.
