Properties of Real Numbers in-class group activity

Summary

In this activity, students are taught all the properties of Real Numbers, then see the examples presented by the instructor. Then, students will form groups of 2 or 3 students and pick one problem from the worksheet to practice what they learned. After successfully completing their task as a group, each group will pair with another group (who worked on different property) to show which problem/property they worked on and how they did it.

Learning Goals

Students should learn how to use all the Real Numbers Properties to simplify algebra expressions.
Critical thinking, data analysis, and oral presentation skills are developed by this activity.

Context for Use

This activity can be used as an in-class activity at all levels from 5-12 and college level. It can be used in lecture, field exercise. It takes about 10 minutes for students to work within their one group and exchange with another group. Students do not require to master the content but need to be willing to learn from others. This activity should be easy to be adapt for use in other settings

Teaching Notes and Tips

This is a modified version of Jigsaw model; students need to have a home group and work on more problems which require more than one properties.

Assessment

A knowledge survey may be a good idea at the end of the class.
