2022 Excellence in JEDI Awardee

The JEDI award recognizes this person or group for their outstanding contribution(s) that may include, but are not limited to, developing both formal and informal activities that promote JEDI in the geosciences, exemplary mentorship of the next generation of diverse geoscientists and geoscience educators, influential communications that promote discussion and actions in support of JEDI, or relevant scholarly contributions.

Vashan Wright, University of California San Diego

Vashan Wright is an assistant professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego. He is Jamaican and enjoys playing tennis, watching television shows, going for walks, and joking around with friends over meals or get-togethers. Vashan studies tectonics, earthquake physics, and geoscience education. Vashan is an outspoken voice for improving belonging, accessibility, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in Geoscience. He believes that cultivating deep, meaningful, and healthy relationships is the key to happiness and productivity.Vashan thanks everyone he worked with in Geoscience education and JEDI programs, FYRES (First-Year Research in Earth Science), GeoFORCE Texas, URGE (Unlearning Racism in Geoscience), and R2GEO (Representation and Retention in Geoscience).
