NAGT Activities at 2013 GSA Annual Meeting

NAGT is pleased to sponsor a variety of symposia and sessions at the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America meeting held in Denver, CO, October 27-30, 2013. Please submit an abstract and plan to attend the following sessions highlighting key issues of importance to geoscience educators at all levels. You can also come by the NAGT booth to meet officers and other NAGT members and to learn more about you can be involved in your organization.

Workshops Early Registration Deadline: September 23, 2013

To sign up for a workshop, use the GSA meeting registration. You can add a short course to your meeting registration or attend a workshop as a stand-alone event without registering for the whole meeting.

Early registration ends on 23 September. After that date, course prices go up by $30. This is to encourage registrants to sign up prior to this date to ensure course viability. See the GSA Short Courses web page for further details and a complete list of all GSA short courses.

The methods and ways of thinking that are intrinsic to Earth science differ in important ways from the experimental procedures that are commonly taught in schools as the scientific method. The phrase geoscientific thinking encompasses the ideas that describe what makes geoscience unique as a discipline yet still clearly part of science as a whole. This half-day workshop will highlight ways to help diverse students learn and develop geoscientific thinking skills appropriate for their level. Participants will explore general strategies for teaching geoscientific thinking and modify an existing activity to integrate geoscientific thinking more explicitly.

Participants will be introduced to a suite of engaging, peer-reviewed classroom activities for learning about climate science. Participants rotate through stations highlighting some of the activities featured in the NSF-funded digital library for educational resources from the Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN, cleanet.org). A brief introduction to the nationally endorsed Climate Literacy Principles will provide a necessary mental framework for planning your next climate lessons.

Sustainability is a central theme for teaching about the environment and requires the integration of perspectives from science, economics, and society. Workshop participants will work to strengthen the teaching of sustainability through the increased integration of geoscience and sustainability education. Participants will share successful strategies and materials for teaching sustainability.

Cheap, reliable and abundant energy powers the modern world. But increasing global demand, declining conventional primary energy sources, sustainability of renewable resources and the environmental impacts of energy all contribute to make energy one of the grand challenges of the 21st century. Preparing our students for this challenge requires addressing traditional geoscience topics, e.g. oil, coal, petroleum, as well as topics rarely covered in traditional geoscience courses, e.g. externalities, energy transitions, energy return on investment, life-cycle assessment, thermodynamic efficiency. This workshop will introduce earth science instructors to different energy perspectives. It will provide background content knowledge, examine effective pedagogical techniques for teaching these concepts, demonstrate examples of proven active classroom activities and strategies and show how these themes have been incorporated into a variety of undergraduate courses at different grade levels and in different disciplines. A key component of the workshop will be to introduce participants to sources of energy data, the primary energy research literature and how to leverage the wealth of information coming out of the business and technology communities that tie into all energy themes and that are useful in demonstrating the relevancy of energy and its different perspectives to students. In this manner, participants will be introduced to the tools that will allow them to incorporate energy into their own teaching.

T115. Climate Literacy: Formal and Informal Education and Community Outreach Efforts to Enable Responsible Decisions

Abstracts focusing on descriptions of efforts for pre-college (students & teachers), higher education, informal education audiences, and community outreach, including materials, activities, curriculum, capstone projects, service learning, professional development programs, and community activities, are encouraged.

T116. Climate Literacy: Research and Evaluation Results from Informal and Formal Climate Education Efforts

This session focuses on what education, social, and cognitive research and project evaluation can tell us about misconceptions and incorrect mental models that hinder the understanding of the complex climate system.

T117. Developing and Sustaining Thriving Geoscience Programs and Departments: Strategies and Examples from Two-Year and Four-Year Colleges and Universities

Strategies for developing and sustaining thriving geoscience programs are varied across institution types, yet much can be learned from shared successes. Suggested topics include issues related to faculty, including adjuncts, students, building curriculum, and administration.

We encourage contributions on dual-credit/concurrent-enrollment geoscience classes taught at high schools and supported by college faculty as well as on other successful collaborations for recruiting high school students into geoscience majors.

This session will highlight significant changes that have occurred in informal and formal geoscience education and outreach programs during the past 50 years and the organizations (governmental and professional) that facilitate them.

Geoscience students and educators are encouraged to disseminate current and historical research findings and instructional experiences that promote the enhancement of diverse participation in the geosciences through increased access and inclusion.

T130. Status of Undergraduates and K–12 Students—Involved Geoscience Research: Impact on Science and Society (Posters)

This session marks a decade-long (2004–2013) continuity and efforts to reach out to potential undergraduates and K–12 students involved in geoscience-related research. It is open to anyone who cares about landscape, natural resources, water, and hot environmental topics.

T132. Strategies to Support Part-Time Faculty in Two-Year and Four-Year College Geoscience Programs

Part-time faculty often provide the majority of introductory geoscience instruction at two-year and four-year colleges, including online and off-campus programs. This session highlights successful strategies for supporting part-time faculty with instructional, administrative, and community resources.

Effective communication of geosciences can be accomplished through a combination of diverse and unique methods. The session focuses on training, assessment, and outreach strategies for improving communication of geosciences to formal and informal audiences.

Political decisions require balancing competing needs. This session will explore the role of science and scientists in shaping political discussions. Specifically, we will explore the value of multidisciplinary training in traversing the science policy gap.
