Greetings NAGT members-

Many of you have been interested in the new Science Education
Standards activity underway at the NRC. Below is an announcement of
the second public meeting which includes a link to information about
the project.

An overarching committee has been established to provide a conceptual
framework for the new standards. That committee is supported by four
design teams including one in the Earth and Space Sciences led by
Michael Wysession from Washington University. The other members of
the Earth and Space Science deisgn team are:

Don Duggan-Haas, Museum of the Earth, Ithaca, NY
Scott Linneman, Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA
Eric Pyle, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA
Dennis Schatz, Pacific Science Center, Seattle, WA

Many of you expressed concern that the overarching committee did not
contain a geoscientist. Michael has indicated that Tanya Atwater has
been named to the overarching committee. He also notes that John
Mather a Nobel Prize winner for his work
with the NASA COBE mission, studying the cosmic microwave background, is
representing the space sciences." Thankyou to those who expressed concern to the NRC.

The design team has a strong foundation for its work in the the Earth,
Ocean, Atmosphere and Climate literacy documents developed over the

If you are interested in receiving further announcements and requests
for input as the development of the new standards move forward we
would like to encourage you to join the new NAGT list-serv Nagtliteracy@serc.carleton.edu.
. We will use this list to forward announcements about the process,
as well as updates and requests for input from Michael. We will also
use this list to provide information about work to create an

The second meeting of the Conceptual Framework for New Science
Education Standards Committee will take place on March 4 through 6,
2010 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill (400 New Jersey
Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20001). There will be an open session on
March 4 from 10:15 am until 2:30 pm. The agenda for this day is
attached. The open session is designed to provide the committee and
the public with a deep understanding of learning progressions as they
relate to development of educational goals.

The remainder of the meeting will be in closed session.

The National Academies are working on a FAQ to go with the conceptual framework for K-12 science education standards when they are released (still no idea when that will be - but evidently pretty soon). This gives us an opportunity to ask questions - both ones they could answer now and ones that would be of interest when the report comes out. What kinds of things would you like to know? I understand the questions will change when you see the document -- but are there things you can think of now?
