Search for In The Trenches Editor

The National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) is seeking a new Editor for In The Trenches (ITT) to begin serving in December, 2025

Do you enjoy learning about what people are doing in the geoscience education community? Do you get excited about working directly with authors to quickly amplify their ideas and classroom successes? Do you believe in strengthening the NAGT community through promoting discussion of impactful topics and ideas? If so, you should consider applying to be Editor of In The Trenches, NAGT's interactive online publication.

In The Trenches is a dynamic platform where NAGT members connect, share teaching strategies and resources, discuss association news, and engage in meaningful conversations about Earth education and research. We foster immediate interaction through online articles with threaded discussion boards. ITT is the members-only publication of NAGT, a non-profit, member-driven organization that supports a diverse, inclusive, and thriving community of educators and education researchers to improve teaching and learning about the Earth.

The Editor takes the lead on maintaining a high-quality online publication that responds to the needs and interests of the NAGT, solicits articles from potential authors, and fields submissions through the ITT submission form. In addition, the Editor works with the NAGT Executive Office and serves in an ex officio non-voting capacity on NAGT's Executive Committee. We seek an editor who will work with us to maintain and increase the online publication's impact and wants to support a vibrant community.

Duties of the ITT

  • Attending to timely and regular publication of articles, with an average of one every two weeks;
  • Making guiding decisions about content;
  • Soliciting articles from potential authors, including scheduled articles like columns from NAGT committees;
  • Fielding submissions through the In The Trenches online submission form;
  • Working with authors and associate editors to edit articles and prepare them for publication;
  • Reviewing the layout for articles prior to making them live;
  • Working with the NAGT News editor and Executive Office staff to promote articles as they are published;
  • Working with members of the Executive Committee to think creatively and modify the format, delivery modes, and other aspects of the publication as necessary;
  • Attending all NAGT Executive Committee meetings as an ex officio member; and
  • Providing mid-year and annual reports to the Executive Committee on your activities and the health of ITT.
