2. Earth Educators' Rendezvous Update

We are 5 weeks away from our inaugural event in Boulder!

We look forward to seeing everyone in Boulder next month.

3. NAGT Announces Summer Intern

Thanks to the generosity of the Carleton College summer intern program, NAGT is pleased to announce that Claire Spencer will be interning with NAGT this summer. Claire is a Carleton College senior majoring in math and statistics. She is from Virginia and she enjoys tennis, gymnastics and weight lifting in her free time. She spent last summer working at NASA's Langley Research Center. Claire will be working in the national office and assisting with membership and subscription services, award programming and journal archiving.

4. Digitizing JGE Past Issues

Kristen St. John, the editor of JGE, is moving forward with plans to digitize the entire collection of past JGE issues. We have reviewed our inventory of back issues and are missing a few issues. NAGT would be interested in borrowing or acquiring the following issues to complete our set:

  • 1951 Volume 1, Issue 1
  • 1952 any issue
  • 1953 any issue
  • 1961 Volume 9, Issue 2

Thank you for your assistance with this project to get all of JGE online and accessible. Please contact Erica at ezweifel@carleton.edu if you have one of these issues.

5. News from InTeGrate

Recent Publicity

InTeGrate is "...predicated on the development of an interdisciplinary community that shares its expertise. Working together to create model materials and to demonstrate how they can be used in new ways, we are creating needed opportunities for students to understand the environmental and resource issues we face as a society. By reaching out to engage our colleagues in this work, we hope to create a citizenry and workforce that can succeed in addressing these challenges."

InTeGrate Announces Publication of a New Teaching Module

InTeGrate seeks to increase Earth literacy of all undergraduate students, as well as the number of graduates who are prepared to bring an understanding of the Earth to bear on the resource and environmental issues faced by our society today and in the future. To this end, we are pleased to announce the publication of new teaching materials on its Web site.

Interactions between Water, Earth's Surface, and Human Activity

Developed by Professor Sue DeBari, Western Washington University; Professor Kyle Gray, University of Northern Iowa; and Professor Julie Monet, California State University-Chico; this two-week teaching module focuses on water and its importance to humans, both as a limited resource and in shaping Earth's surface. Water's flow through the hydrologic cycle is driven by Earth's external energy source—the Sun. Students see that river systems change shape over time, are influenced by climate and by human activity, and affect human activity, for example through flooding. Students develop their understanding while working in small groups, through interaction with simplified physical models of complicated systems, with Google Earth images of stream profiles in different climates, and with real river flooding data sets. Interactions between Water, Earth's Surface, and Human Activity is a great fit for courses in Earth science, environmental science, water resources, and introductory geoscience.

6. New HHMI undergraduate science education grants competition

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute recently announced a new competition for science education grants to colleges and universities called "Inclusive Excellence: Engaging all students in science." Because you are on my list of professional society contacts, I wanted to reach out and encourage you to share the news of this opportunity with your members who care about the future of undergraduate science education.

The goal of this initiative is to help institutions increase their capacity for inclusion to effectively engage and support the success all students in science throughout their undergraduate years, especially those who come to college via nontraditional pathways. The new competition will be open to US colleges and universities that award the baccalaureate degree in the natural sciences and are fully accredited, not-for-profit, four-year institutions. It will exclude the 40 universities awarded 2014 HHMI institutional grants.

You can learn more about the new Inclusive Excellence competition through the May press release (http://www.hhmi.org/news/hhmi-announces-60-million-science-education-initiative) and find details to share with your members on the program webpage at Inclusive Excellence 2017 (http://www.hhmi.org/InclusiveExcellence2017).
