Job Description

The Department of Biology, Marine Biology, and Environmental Science at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Global Environmental Change to begin August 2024. We seek an educator and interdisciplinary scholar who utilizes remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and/or geospatial analysis and modeling to investigate the drivers, consequences, and management of global change across spatiotemporal scales. The area of specialization is open, though preference will be given to applicants with expertise in topics such as wildlife management, forest dynamics, food systems, environmental justice, disease ecology, and others that expand existing departmental strengths and course offerings.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute to the department's focus on student-centered undergraduate teaching by leading and collaboratively updating an existing introductory-level environmental science offering, and developing courses in environmentally-focused GIS and/or remote sensing and upper-level electives in their area of expertise. RWU's standard teaching load is twenty-one (21) contact hours during the academic year (a 4-3 course load across semesters). Our new colleague may also potentially contribute to interdisciplinary programs such as Sustainability Studies, Food Studies, and Public Health, and the University's general education program with courses in systems thinking and/or first-year and senior seminars. They are expected to develop and maintain an active research program that involves undergraduates. In addition to teaching and research, our new colleague will participate in departmental and university service, including serving on committees and advising students. They will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in all aspects of teaching, scholarship, and service.

Job Requirements

  • PhD in environmental science, ecology, geography, earth system science, or a related field, or be ABD with degree received before the start date of the appointment.
  • Expertise or demonstrated interest in using remote sensing and GIS tools for research
  • Record of, or potential for, scholarship leading to peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
  • Interest in and commitment to using active, innovative, and engaged pedagogies in undergraduate lecture and laboratory settings.

Desired Qualifications

  • Three or more years of undergraduate teaching experience in lecture and laboratory settings
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring undergraduate researchers

At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be accepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
