Geoscience Assistant Opening at Carleton College

Carleton College welcomes applications for a Geoscience Assistant for the Science Education Resource Center (SERC). SERC works to improve education through projects that support educators with an emphasis on the geosciences. The office has special expertise in effective pedagogies, geoscience education, community organization, workshop leadership, digital libraries, website development and program and website evaluation.

The Geoscience Assistant works as a member of the SERC webteam to develop new and improve existing websites, to support professional development workshops, and to maintain the SERC collections.

This is a full-time position that is eligible for the College's benefit package. Occasional travel to workshops and professional meetings is required.

Job Responsibilities

The Geoscience Assistant works closely with SERC staff and other collaborators to develop websites and their content. Specific responsibilities include

  • Working with external collaborators to design and structure websites including finding, organizing and cataloging existing resources, authoring new resources, and supporting faculty authoring of content.
  • Working independently and with collaborators on web authoring and professional development projects covering topics within the geosciences, STEM, and education.
  • Providing back up and support for the work of other web content developers
  • Participating in the development and maintenance of overarching SERC collections and portals.
  • Supporting face-to-face and virtual workshops and meetings, particularly the development of workshop websites, use of the website during the workshop, and collection of materials at the workshop for the website.
  • Managing and coordinating all work related to a specific workshop or website project, including logistics, attending to the needs of workshop participants and assisting the project leaders with the execution of the workshop.

Required Qualifications

  • MS in geoscience or a closely related field (including environmental studies, environmental economics or geography)
  • Strong interest in higher education.
  • Strong writing and communication skills including ability to create well designed web pages that quickly convey the scope of content and its importance while drawing user into more complex information deeper in the site; to effectively edit submissions from a variety of sources to create cohesive products and to deliver professional presentations.
  • Ability to confidently interact with university faculty, scientists and other professionals while managing projects, guiding the work of individuals and leading workshop groups.
  • Comfort working with groups of workshop participants both during one-on-one virtual interactions and in large group face-to-face settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently complete project on schedule and to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently on loosely defined tasks as well as in close cooperation with a tight-knit team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and develop web content;
  • Knowledge of higher education and its culture, knowledge of effective practices and challenges in higher education.
  • Affinity for computer work, fluency with common commercial software products, and ability to quickly learn new computer operations, such as with SERC's content management system.
  • Teaching experience
