General Description

College of the Sequoias is seeking an equity-minded candidate to fill a full-time, tenure-track position in the Geography Department beginning August 2022.

Job Duties

 The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching physical geography, physical geography lab, and world regional geography. Possible additional offerings depend on the expertise and preference of the successful candidate and could include courses in meteorology and/or geographic information systems.

Assignments may include evening classes, weekend classes, and teaching at any of the College of the Sequoias campuses: Visalia, Hanford, and/or Tulare. Participation in the governance of the District by way of committee assignments is expected.

Other responsibilities include maintenance of a number of office hours, full participation in departmental responsibilities and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equality, which is respectful of diversity campus wide.

 

Qualifications

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 The candidate must meet the following criteria.

  • Master's in geography OR
  • Bachelor's in geography AND Master's in geology, history, meteorology, or oceanography OR
  • The equivalent AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

The Science Division/Geography Department is looking for evidence of the following:

  • Experience teaching a wide variety of both human and physical geography courses at the post-secondary level
  • Ability and experience in developing lecture and laboratory activities, course syllabi, and instructional materials that support student success.
  • Ability to incorporate student learning outcome objectives within courses and programs and willingness to use and develop stated objectives and measures.
  • Knowledge and/or experience using a variety of instructional delivery modes.
  • Graduate and/or undergraduate coursework related to teaching.
  • Familiarity with the educational needs of a diverse student population.
  • Community college teaching experience
  • Successful experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and demonstrated commitment to valuing and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Enthusiastic participation in professional responsibilities, community and/or campus service.
  • Evidence of ability to use a variety of teaching strategies and assessment methods that are equity minded and encourage retention while successfully challenging a diverse student population.
  • Demonstrated interest in improving educational methods in the advancement of teaching excellence.
  • Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
