NSTA continues to explore the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) by presenting a web seminar series focusing on the disciplinary core ideas. The fall series features four informative and interactive web seminars on physical science core ideas and three on Earth and space science. The series will continue in 2014 with web seminars on life science and engineering design.

The interaction between people and the planet will be explored in this week's FREE web seminar focusing on Earth and Human Activity. This topic has students address questions such as "How do humans depend on Earth's resources?" and "How do humans change the planet?"

Join presenters Susan Buhr, director of the education outreach program of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), and Aida Awad, President of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers and Science Department Chair at Maine East High School, as they explore concepts that are central to understanding this core idea, including:
  • how students' understanding of Earth and human activity might progress over their K–12 education,
  • how students can engage in the scientific and engineering practices to gain an understanding of these ideas; and
  • what instruction might look like in the classroom.
