Sedimentologist/Stratigrapher Position
The Department of Geology/Geography at Eastern Illinois University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with primary expertise in sedimentology and stratigraphy to begin August 2009. A Ph.D. at the time of appointment and a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service are required. The successful candidate will be expected to teach general-education courses in introductory earth science and major courses in sedimentology and stratigraphy, as well as develop an upper level course in the candidate's specialty such as basin analysis, sequence stratigraphy, or energy resources (e.g., related to petroleum, coal, natural gas, uranium). The successful candidate will be expected to teach laboratory sections, conduct field work and field trips, and assist with the department's field camp. The Department at EIU is student-oriented, encourages mentoring of undergraduate research, and applied regional studies.

The mission of NCKRI's Education Program covers cave and karst education at all levels, including K-12, undergraduate to post-doctoral, professional, policy-makers, and the general public. We seek an Education Director to conduct supervisory, programmatic, financial, and educational work to administer the Program, as well as generally supporting NCKRI's functions. Cave and karst education materials and programs will vary according to the target audience and will include general knowledge and appreciation, multidisciplinary topics such as geology, biology, hydrology, and archeology in karst areas, awareness of unique environmental vulnerabilities in karst, and sound stewardship practices. The Education Director should have at least a Bachelor's degree in Education with a science or environmental emphasis (applicants with a Master's or doctorate degree are desired), understanding of current trends and technologies in educational methods and theory, and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with international to local partners to develop joint educational programs. Knowledge of interpretive practices, techniques, and concepts related to caves and karst is desired, as well as the ability to safely conduct educational activities in diverse outdoor environments, including caves. Creative applicants with limited karst experience but strong experience in similar areas, and the proven ability to adapt, will be considered. This position will be based in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
