Geology Instructor at Santa Monica College
published Feb 7, 2012 3:05pmTeach introductory lecture and laboratory courses in Physical Geology, Historical Geology, and Oceanography at Santa Monica College; a qualified candidate will be able to teach all courses within the Geology program.
Develop new Geology curriculum into areas such as Geospatial Technologies and geothermal energy assessment; specifically, addressing applications of these new technologies in Geology; Develop new curriculum to include concepts of Sustainability; connect coursework to the Sustainable Technologies Program (STP) within the Earth Science Department, especially in the rapidly expanding areas of Renewable Energies and Resource Management (water and soil management and especially in the areas of exploring and developing Rare Earth minerals that are used in the making of computers, cell phones, and solar photovoltaic panels) through integration of new Geology curricula with the STP curricula; act as lead faculty for the Geology program; taking an active role in peer evaluation of current adjunct faculty, develop programmatic infrastructure housed within the Earth Science Department that will build on course objectives to provide consistent and appropriate Student Learning Outcomes; review and update Student Learning Outcomes for all current Geology curricula;assist in the development of a Geoscience Technician Certificate and Associate of Science degree in accordance with the Geology Transfer Model Curriculum under SB 1440; help develop an Industry Advisory Board for the Geoscience Technician certificate to assure the certificate is meeting the needs of industry and preparing students for either placement in jobs or articulation to four-year universities; maintain office hours; participate in development and evaluation of course materials, selection of textbooks, academic and career advisement, staff development programs and college department and faculty organization activities.
Minimum Qualifications: Master's Degree in Geography, OR Bachelor's in geography and Masters in geology, history, meteorology, or oceanography OR the equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications: PhD in geology or closely related field however the specialization is open; demonstrated excellence in teaching college level geology; experience in geological fieldwork; experience with the use of technology as a teaching tool; evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the community college student population including students with physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences in learning styles.
