The Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences in the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor with expertise in Sustainability Studies. This is a nine-month non-tenure track position with competitive salary and benefits, and is expected to begin on August 15, 2026. It is a three-year appointment with the possibility for renewal and promotion.

Required minimum qualifications are: (1) a PhD degree in Geography or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment; (2) the ability to contribute to undergraduate curricula in Geography, Sustainability, General Education, and programmatic advising; and (3) the ability to contribute to the Department's interdisciplinary teaching mission. The successful candidate will play an important role in the Human Geography component of UNC Charlotte's undergraduate programs and general education offerings. The successful candidate is expected to teach: (1) introductory sections of Environment, Society, and Sustainability; (2) Foundations of Sustainability, and (3) courses within the overall Geography and Environmental Studies curriculum. Potential contributions to the department's new Minor in Sustainability and upper-level courses are also welcome related to the candidate's area of specialization. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage, include, and eliminate barriers to learning for UNC Charlotte undergraduate students, and how their educational approach helps increase the engagement and success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the University.

The Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences (https://geoearth.charlotte.edu/) is a diverse community of physical, geospatial, and social scientists composed of over 35 faculty members, 400 undergraduate majors, and 80 graduate students. The Department's current mission is to inspire discovery of the Earth and its inhabitants and to foster informed communities of learners who strive for a sustainable world. The Department creates and disseminates knowledge of the Earth's human and natural systems to adapt to an ever-changing environment in which we live, work, and interact. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Geography (BA/BS), Environmental Studies (BA), Meteorology (BS), Earth and Environmental Sciences (BS), Geology (BS), and minors in both Sustainability and Urban Studies. At the graduate level, the Department offers an MS in Earth Sciences, an MA and PhD in Geography, and regularly participate in the interdisciplinary Infrastructure and Environmental Systems (INES) and Public Policy (PPOL) PhD programs. The Department is also home to the Center for Applied Geographic Information Science (CAGIS, https://gis.charlotte.edu/) and the Charlotte Action Research Project (CHARP, https://charp.charlotte.edu/). The Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences is housed within the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences (CHESS).
