Laboratory Instructor, Earth and Oceanographic Science, Bowdoin College

Job Summary

Bowdoin College has a full-time, academic year, benefits-eligible Laboratory Instructor position available in Earth and Oceanographic Science. The starting date is negotiable but must begin by August 15, 2023. Review of applications will begin at the end of February 2023. The lab instructor will teach labs associated with specific courses in the Earth and Oceanographic Science Department. Laboratory instructors work both independently and collaboratively with faculty to design curriculum and innovative laboratory exercises that foster student understanding of scientific concepts, methodology, and principles. Specific duties include coordination, set up, implementation, and clean-up of the lab portion of the course; teaching and guiding students through lab exercises; grading of laboratory reports and exams; hiring and supervising student assistants; designing and testing of lab activities, experiments, and equipment; and participating in department meetings. Successful applicants will join a supportive department comprised of six faculty members, one laboratory instructor, an instrumentation specialist, and an academic coordinator.

Education/Skills Requirements

Applicants must possess a BS or BA in a natural science field with a degree in earth science, geology, or geoscience education (MS, MA or PhD is strongly preferred). Prior experience teaching preferred, particularly in laboratory and field settings. Candidates should be familiar with the use of field equipment in the geosciences, and data acquisition and analysis in the field and laboratory. Candidates should be able to learn how to operate new lab equipment. Excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to provide individual and group instruction to a range of learning styles. Demonstrated excellence with supervisory skills, problem solving abilities, and organizational skills. Teaching responsibilities will include the lab portions of introductory courses (e.g., physical geology, environmental geology, hydrogeology) and may include instruction of laboratory sections in upper-level courses, depending on departmental needs.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

Experience in teaching in both laboratory and field settings; ability to drive a 12-passenger van; ability to lift 20 pounds.

Standard Work Days and Hours

Monday – Friday 8:30am – 5:00pm Some weekends or evening hours may be required.
