Position: Assistant Professor of Geology, joint appointment with the Department of Geosciences and Environment and with the Natural Science Program.
Starting Date: Fall 2018
Minimum Qualifications:
1.Earned Ph.D. or equivalent in a field related to geology and/or geoscience education from an accredited institution;
2.Evidence of effective teaching at the undergraduate level with experience teaching lower division physical, earth, and space sciences content and pedagogy courses and upper division major courses in geology;
3.Evidence of scholarship through publications in scholarly journals, reports, conferences, and/or other peer-reviewed forums;
4.Evidence of scholarship in undergraduate science education, and;
5.Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a multicultural/multiethnic urban campus environment with a substantial population of first-generation students.
Preferred Qualifications:
1.Master's degree or equivalent in geology or related field;
2.Evidence of ability to teach courses in one or more areas of geology, e.g., structural geology, tectonics, and/or sedimentary process, at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
3.Evidence of ability to teach natural science research experience capstone course at the undergraduate level;
4.Expertise in undergraduate science education;
5.Evidence of cross-disciplinary collaborations in undergraduate science education, and;
6.Experience developing multi-disciplinary degree programs within the College of Natural and Social Sciences and to STEM education initiatives at the University.
Duties: The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.
1.Teach undergraduate and graduate content and pedagogy courses in geosciences;
2.Create and/or transform existing geoscience courses to include more integration of cross-disciplinary curricula, scientific inquiry, and high impact practices such as hand-on research/writing and civic/service engagement;
3.Teach undergraduate content and pedagogy courses in one or more areas of earth and space science (geology and astronomy) and physical science (chemistry and physics), and capstone course in natural science;
4.Conduct individual and collaborative scholarly activities in undergraduate science education;
5.Partner with internal and external constituents, including seeking external funding in support of STEM education initiatives, particularly undergraduate science education and other existing and emerging strategic initiatives for the University;
6.Recruit, advise, and mentor students, including undergraduate and graduate majors in the Department of Geosciences and Environment and undergraduate majors in the Natural Science Program, and;
7.Serve on committees for the Department, the Program, the College, and the University.
