SUMMARY:
The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver) invites candidates to apply for a position to serve as its next Department Chair. The ideal candidate will be a tenured professor with previous leadership, administrative, and teaching experience. The department educates students, promoting science literacy, lifelong learning and appreciation of the Earth system. Graduates gain employment due to the quality and diversity of their skills, or go on to successfully attend graduate school. The multidisciplinary undergraduate department houses five majors: Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, Geospatial Science, and Meteorology. The EAS department is located in the recently renovated Science building and oversees several wet and dry labs, computer labs, and classrooms. The department has an active undergraduate research program. The university prioritizes teaching with a full time faculty load of 12 credits each semester and accompanying research and service expectations. The department chair would be expected to teach 3 credits during their 12 month contract. The department has 15 full time faculty, a number of affiliate faculty, and about 500 declared majors within the department. The department staff consists of a program coordinator, a lab coordinator, and a department advisor. The successful candidate will begin August 1, 2018.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The department chair serves as the chief representative of the department. They provide leadership in assigning teaching duties, oversee an effective governance structure within the department, develop and implement the strategic plan, manage departmental resources, evaluate faculty and staff, promote excellence in teaching and uphold high academic standards relevant to faculty and students through curriculum, teaching, and learning. As faculty, chairs teach and engage in scholarly activity and service. In order to be considered as a qualified applicant, applicants must meet all required qualifications.- Possess a Doctoral degree in one of the disciplinary fields of the EAS Department (Geography, Geology, Geospatial Science, Meteorology, Environmental Science) or a Doctorate in a closely related field. - Must be tenured.
- Have previous leadership experience.
- Have previous administrative experience.
