Visiting Faculty Opportunity in Tectonics/Geophysics - Colorado College

published May 3, 2017 8:50am

The Department of Geology at Colorado College invites applications for a one-year non-tenure track position to begin in mid-August 2017. We seek someone with experience teaching in the field, and preferably familiar with the Rocky Mountain region. The visitor will team-teach two courses that should complement current faculty. One is a sophomore class (GY212) that provides students with an overview of physical processes including surface processes, structure, geophysics, and tectonics, particularly as they apply to our local region, and taught with a surface process geologist; the other is a senior-level regional geology class from Colorado to California. It will be taught with a structural geologist. The faculty visitor will also teach two introductory geology courses. The other two courses are currently scheduled as a course in plate tectonics and a major-required course in geophysics. We will give some preference to people who have experience teaching geophysics and using the equipment the department owns in local projects, although this is not mandatory. Appointment will be at the assistant professor level for candidates holding a PhD, at the Instructor level for ABD candidates.

Applicants must be committed to high-quality innovative undergraduate teaching, including field-oriented courses. The Block System of education at Colorado College, in which professors teach and students take only one course at a time for 3-1/2 weeks, lends itself to field and project-based teaching. The visitor will teach 6 out of 8.5 blocks in the academic calendar. The Department has excellent field equipment and laboratory facilities for teaching and research in all geological disciplines. Information on the positions, facilities, and Department is on line at https://www.coloradocollege.edu/academics/dept/geology/.

Undergraduate research is an integral part of the Colorado College Geology curriculum; thus an ability to advise research in the candidate's areas of expertise is highly desirable. The Geology Dept contributes to CC's Environmental Sciences program, and possibilities may exist for candidates to participate in teaching/advising in that program. The ability to teach GIS and/or to integrate GIS into courses is advantageous but not required. Colorado College is committed to increasing diversity of the community and curriculum. Candidates who can contribute to that goal are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should send statement of teaching and research interests, curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference (electronic copies preferred) to: Jeff Noblett, Chair, Colorado College, 14 E. Cache La Poudre, Colorado Springs, CO 80903, 719-389-6516; email: geology@coloradocollege.edu. The search will remain open until the visitor position is filled.

The Colorado College welcomes members of all groups, and reaffirms its commitment not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, age, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability in its educational programs, activities, and employment practices. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
