The Global Teacher Prize (http://www.globalteacherprize.org) was launched by President Bill Clinton, the honorary chairman of the Varkey GEMS Foundation, in March 2014. The Prize is funded by the Varkey GEMS Foundation with a mission to raise awareness of teaching as a profession, and provide more positive role models of great teachers from around the globe.

The Prize is part of a series of initiatives undertaken by the Foundation to improve teacher status and standards, including activities like the Global Teacher Status Index.

The Foundation's goal is to find the world's best teacher using the criteria that teachers should:
  • deliver 'exceptional results' in student learning
  • go 'beyond the classroom' to gain respect in the community
  • encourage others to join the profession
  • contribute ideas on raising teaching standards locally and nationally
  • be currently working in compulsory education (public or private) for children between 5 and 18
The teacher who is selected will be celebrated, just like the 'Nobel' prize winners, and receive $1 million as a prize. There are also many potential benefits for those who apply, not just the winner - such as making introductions to get education projects funded, and commendations for regional winners.

A shortlist of 50 will be selected for the Prize Committee, and 10 finalists will be voted on by the Global Teacher Prize Academy. The finalists will be invited to the Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai in 2015.

Applications need to be made at http://www.GlobalTeacherPrize.org and the closing date is 5 October.
