Deep Earth Academy, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), and the Consortium for Ocean Leadership are pleased to announce the SCIMPI 2013 School of Rock Expedition Educators aboard the incredible 143m JOIDES Resolution www.joidesresolution.org, a platform outfitted for state-of-the-art scientific exploration and education.

Location: Aboard the JOIDES Resolution off the coast of Victoria, British Columbia.

Application Deadline: January 3, 2013

During this School of Rock research experience, educators will set sail and conduct hands-on analyses of cores and microbial samples with scientists and technicians who specialize in Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) research. This workshop will focus on evidence obtained from samples collected in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Investigations will cover topics such as faults and hard rock geology; micropaleontology, microbiology and the deep biosphere; sedimentology and biostratigraphy; engineering for science and tools for sampling the subseafloor environment. Participants will also observe the installation of a Simple Cabled Instrument for Measuring Parameters in-Situ (SCIMPI) into the seafloor. The workshop will include time to collaborate with scientists, specialists, and other participants to create ways to integrate the experience into instruction and time for live broadcasts and interactions with audiences on-shore.
