published Feb 14, 2011 12:00am
The National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT), publisher of the Journal of Geoscience Education (JGE), invites applications for a three to five-year term as Editor-in-Chief.

Journal of Geoscience Education

The Journal of Geoscience Education is the premier peer-reviewed publication for geoscience education research at the undergraduate and pre-college levels. JGE is the publication of record for NAGT, and serves as the only international forum for the publication of research concerning the pedagogy, assessment, and philosophy of teaching and learning about the geosciences. JGE is published four times per year in February, May, August, and November. Each issue typically consists of between 6 and 10 articles in three categories: empirical or theoretical research papers, curriculum and instruction papers, and commentary papers. JGE also publishes Special Issues on important emerging topics.

Beginning in February 2011, JGE will be available in both online and print versions through the American Institute of Physics (AIP). AIP also currently manages the PeerX-Press electronic submission form for authors. AIP is a leader in publishing print and online peer-reviewed publications. The Geological Society of America, a society partner with NAGT, is an affiliated member of AIP.

Editor-in-Chief

The formal appointment term is three to five years, starting by June 1, 2011 (start date negotiable). It is anticipated that the incoming editor will work collaboratively with the current Editor-in-Chief prior to December 31, 2011 and assume full Editor-in-Chief duties beginning January 1, 2012. The Editor-in-Chief reports to the Executive Committee of NAGT and is fully responsible for the publication of the journal. The Journal is an important member benefit and as such its success impacts the financial health of the organization.

The Editor-in-Chief is also expected to work closely with the Executive Committee and the Executive Director of NAGT in promoting and serving the mission of the Association. It is therefore critical that the Editor-in-Chief be conversant regarding the priorities of the NAGT community, geoscience education research and teaching community that publish regularly within the pages of JGE. The Editor-in-Chief is expected to act as a liaison between and among these communities.

NAGT is a professional society committed to advancing geoscience education research, outreach and classroom curricula at all levels in academia and in the general public. As such, we seek an individual qualified to act as a strong advocate for Association activities and priorities, as well as the intellectual growth of the Journal and the research field of geoscience education. We anticipate that the successful candidate will be an active member of the geoscience education community, experienced in research in geoscience education and/or in the rigorous assessment of student learning gains in geoscience in common educational settings.

The successful candidate should be conversant about online submission, review, and production, and should be prepared to work with AIP for this purpose. Additionally, the Editor-in-Chief will be expected to manage the efforts of the Editor for Curriculum and Instruction and the Editor for Research, plus an additional 20 Associate Editors. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for coordinating review and revision of manuscripts and timely completion of revisions. The Editor-in-Chief should also be knowledgeable of the production, printing, fulfillment, and distribution processes common to print and electronic journals, and be able to advise the Executive Committee on developments and opportunities that could be especially beneficial to JGE and the Association. The Editor-in-Chief is expected to attend all NAGT Executive Committee business meetings, which occur twice per year (usually in the Spring and again on the Saturday before the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting). In addition, the Editor-in-Chief should participate in virtual quarterly meetings.

Duties for this position will begin on or before June 1, 2011. Applications will be reviewed upon receipt and continue until the position is filled. We anticipate conducting interviews beginning in February 2011. Applications should consist of a concise statement outlining a vision for the future of the Journal. Include in your statement how JGE can best serve both the broad membership of NAGT and the geoscience education and teaching community. Provide a brief implementation plan for assuming responsibilities and current Curriculum Vita.

NAGT will negotiate a final plan regarding administrative support, travel support, telephone and Internet access, and other basic infrastructure in collaboration with the successful candidate for the ultimate establishment of the Editorship.

Prospective candidates are welcome to submit letters of interest prior to submitting full application materials. These materials and any other inquiries should be submitted via e-mail to Dr. Mike Taber, Chair of the JGE Editor Search Committee. Please also include complete contact information for five (5) references.
