Dr. Jim Reynolds and Dr. Melanie Heying (Brevard College, Brevard, NC) teach a section of GEO 270 in the Summer of 2015, titled "Field Study in Geology: The Geology of Iceland" that is also open to participants from other campuses. The 4-credit lab course will meet several times for organizational purposes during the Spring '15 semester. Off-campus participants will not be required to attend. The actual course will be a ~3-week camping field trip to Iceland July 5-27, 2015. The trip will go with a minimum of 15 participants and a final enrollment of about 20 is expected.

The course will introduce participants to plate tectonics with specific focus on the tectonic history of Iceland through daily field excursions from central camping locations. Evening sessions will be devoted to reflection on the days' experiences and an introduction to the field excursions for the following day. Accompanying some of these evening sessions will be relevant lectures covering volcanism and volcanic geomorphology, glaciers and glacial geomorphology, landslides, rivers, and coastal geology. Students will be required to take field notes and keep a journal that includes field sketches, on a daily basis.

Participants from outside of Brevard College may register for the trip and pay by credit card by calling the Finance Office at 828-884-8263. A $500, non-refundable deposit is required, by April 15th with the balance due on May 1st. If, however, the trip does not recruit 15 participants, the deposits will be returned in full.
