Opportunities at GSA

If you are attending the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in October, there are a number of activities and opportunities you can take advantage of. On the Saturday just before the meeting starts (10/17) there is a workshop which you may be interested in attending. (Check the link to see how to register if you're interested in attending.)

And that evening from 5-7PM there is a Geoscience Educators Social Reception. It's free and will be held in the Doubletree Hotel, Mt. Hood and Mt. Bachelor rooms.

On Sunday, October 18th NAGT is holding it's Awards Luncheon to recognize 2009's award winners. This year, among others, we will be honoring Heather Macdonald with the Neil Miner Award, former JGE editor Carl Drummond with the James Shea Award, and Robert Christman as the first recipient of the Robert Christman Distinguished Service Award. Citations for the awardees will be posted on the website after the meeting. Don't forget to buy your ticket for this event when you register for GSA.

On Monday and Tuesday, October 19-20, there will be two events dealing with hazards related to natural disasters. On Monday, there is a Hazards and Health Symposium on Preventing Disaster and Building Resilience on the Ring of Fire. And over both days there are three sessions addressing Current Advances in Understanding Societal Risk and Resilience to Natural Disasters (1, [link http://gsa.confex.com/gsa/2009AM/finalprogram/session_25196.htm Slide 1 .O {font-size:149%;} '2'], 3)

On Tuesday, October 20th consider attending the Geoscience Education and NAGT Research Interest Group meeting from 6-8PM in the Hilton Portland and Executive Tower - Grand Ballroom Parlors A, B and C.

And don't forget to stop by the NAGT booth. There will be all sorts of information and materials available on various NAGT programs as well as the many sponsored projects. You'll also be able to see the cover art for the new NAGT environmental science textbook - Living with Earth - at the booth and take a look at the previously-published Lab Manual in Physical Geology.

Be sure to check out the full listing of education themed sessions at the NAGT website.
