Natural hazards impact millions of people around the world each year and present an opportunity for educators to connect class content to real-world events. In particular, social media is a powerful way to engage students with geohazards as they are unfolding in real-time. In this talk, we will discuss the basics of science and geohazards communication across social media, including the ways that students can glimpse science "in action" during an ongoing crisis. We will also explore the power of social media for increasing student interest in science, best practices for engaging on different platforms, ways you can support your students in effective social media use, and tips for contentious communication that can be applied in all forms of communication.
