(b) Deformed fence 100 years later, prior to a big earthquake when the rocks would have bent near the fault. Dotted line shows original position of the fence. (c) Fence is broken by a big earthquake as sides of the fault finally slip past each other and rocks on either side unbend. (d) Fence is deformed again 100 years later as rocks near the fault bend.
