FIGURE 1: GPS data (Shen et al., 2011) indicating that the rate of horizontal ground motion varies with distance from the locked San Andreas fault. Such data may be discrepant to learners and can serve as a cognitive hook to engage students in developing an explanatory model of earthquake occurrence.
