  • Monohybrid Fruit Fly Crosses: A Simulation Students use a computer simulation, the commercial Biolabs Virtual Fly simulation, of fruit fly crosses to investigate the inheritance of a simple Mendelian trait.
  • Writing a Wikipedia Genetic Disease Article For this assignment students use online genetic databases such as Genbank and OMIM to research a particular genetic disorder and then write an article about the disease for the online Wikipedia Encylopedia project.
  • Searching Genbank In this activity students search the Genbank database for a specific entry on the hemoglobin genes. After finding the entry students learn about the kinds of information available in a Genbank record and some uses for that information.
  • Protein Evolution In this activity students explore the evolution of proteins.
  • Phenylketonuira In this activity, students are assigned different alleles of the gene for phenylalanine hydroxylase to research using OMIM (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man).
