Constructing a Geologic Cross Section - Wells G & H Superfund Site, Woburn, MA

Summary

This activity leads students through the process of creating geologic cross sections based on data obtained from well logs. Students are asked to determine the elevation of each lithology, interpolate how the lithologies behave between the well sites, and construct a finished cross section. There is also a question set for students to complete following the exercise.

This activity was developed for an introductory level, mock-trial class centered around the Woburn, MA pollution trial. It is also appropriate for an introductory level structural geology or groundwater hydrology class.

Assessment

Students hand in the cross section they develop as well as the question set. The instructor may want to grade the cross section more qualitatively than the questions (credit for "reasonable effort" or "on the right track.")
