What is it like to be a geologist? A phenomenology of geology and its epistemological implications
T. Raab, R. Frodeman 2002 Philosophy and Geography v. 5, no. 1, p. 69-81

The authors of this article take a philosophical approach to geological field work, and describe how field work differs fundamentally from laboratory work. The authors build on the idea that field work does not fit within a traditional philosophy of science as a form of investigation. They argue that the kinesthetic and sensory experience of being in the field requires intuition and a synthetic approach that is absent in other sciences.
