Using Cooperative Learning in Science Education

This review discusses the definition of cooperative learning, applications for science classrooms, and research on its effectiveness. Cooperative learning is more than just working in groups: students must be interdependent, interact with each other, be individually accountable, and use interpersonal skills. According to the research summarized here, cooperative learning can greatly enhance science learning, but not under all circumstances. Teachers need training and practice to use cooperative learning effectively.
