Problem-based learning: as authentic as it gets
William Stepien, Shelagh Gallagher 1993 Educational Leadership v50 n7 p25(4)

The Center for Problem-Based Learning and the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy have developed problem-based learning units which aim to enhance students' achievement and motivation. Students are given complex problems without being instructed on how they can solve them. Thus, students develop their own problem-solving techniques. Self-directed study is encouraged and students take on the roles of scientists, doctors, artists and historians. However, educators must be trained on how to facilitate problem-based learning properly and more appropriate materials on the subject are needed. Citing specific examples used in classrooms at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, the authors illustrate that the authentic learning experience fosters not only problem-solving, but also learning content and skills.
