1. Executive Director's Office Closed for August

Just as a reminder, NAGT's Executive office is taking a much-needed break for the month of August. The office will be officially closed from August 1 until September 5 (think of it as honoring the eclipse for the entire month!). While we will not respond to email during this time, you are still welcome to renew your membership, submit manuscripts to the Journal of Geoscience Education, submit applications for the Traveling Workshop Program, and -- of course! -- make use of all of our web resources.

We will be in touch in early September with a full array of fall activities including membership drive, workshops and other programming, as well as NAGT events at GSA and AGU.

Have a great rest of the summer,

Executive Director's Office Staff

2. 2017 Earth Educators' Rendezvous Follow-up

Thank you to everyone who attended the 3rd Earth Educators' Rendezvous in Albuquerque, NM. 360 participants took part in the workshops, presentations, posters, and teaching demos over the course of the week. What a tremendous time of learning, sharing, networking, and collaborating. We hope you were able to connect with colleagues old and new and left with concrete ideas and inspiration for teaching as well as creative ways to continue to build our community. Check out the Rendezvous 2017 slide show on the top page of the EER website.

Please remember to complete the End of Meeting Survey before you get caught up in "real life" again. Your feedback on how the meeting went is crucial to continuing to improve the event and deliver high-quality experiences to future participants.

Speaking of future participants, be sure to save the date now for the 2018 Earth Educators' Rendezvous in Lawrence, KS, July 16-20, 2018. Planning has already begun and you can be a part of it. If you have ideas or suggestions for the 2018 EER Program use the form on the website to tell us about them.

Thank you again for your enthusiasm and energy last week. The Rendezvous wouldn't be a success without your participation.

3. GSA and AGU Abstract Deadlines: August 1 and 2

Don't forget that the deadlines for submitting abstracts to the GSA Annual Meeting and the AGU Fall Meeting are August 1st and 2nd respectively. As always, NAGT has posted extensive information about sessions, workshops, and other events that will take place at each of these meetings on our website.

NAGT Members are a crucial piece of the education community at both of these meetings, so submit abstracts to share your work with the rest of the community.

And don't forget to stop by the NAGT booth at both meetings to say hi and meet other members and officers!

4. InTeGrate Announces New Teaching Module

Major Storms and Community Resilience is a 2-3 week module that aims to help students identify and describe weather-related hazards and vulnerabilities for their community; relate historical storm data at the national- and local-scale in order to draw conclusions and community preparedness and current and future community vulnerabilities; and develop evidence-based strategies and recommendations to mitigate local community vulnerabilities to storms with specific emphasis on different sectors and/or stakeholders in that community.

Major Storms and Community Resilience is a great fit for courses in natural hazards, environmental studies, environmental science, Earth science, public policy, and disaster management.

5. Workshop: Putting Sustainability into Action - New Strategies for Courses and Programs

October 26-28, 2017
Florida A & M University, Tallahassee, FL

Sustainability has emerged as a central theme for teaching about the environment. Whether it is from the perspective of science, economics, or society, sustainability is of high interest to students, including those who are traditionally underrepresented in the geosciences. This workshop is open to multi-disciplinary teams of faculty, administrators, and sustainability officers who work with community members and have opportunities to incorporate and strengthen sustainability in courses and programs. Building on the InTeGrate HBCU Geosciences Working Group experiences and expertise, teams will develop culturally responsive methods and practices for putting environmental and social sustainability into action in courses and programs at their institutions. We encourage applicants from all disciplines, especially, education; natural and social sciences; geosciences; engineering; and humanities.

The application deadline is September 15, 2017.

6. Virtual Presentation Opportunity for Your Students

Online abstract submissions are now being accepted for the Fall 2017 Virtual Poster Showcase (VPS) for undergraduate and graduate students.

Encourage your students to submit abstracts at http://virtualposter.agu.org. To learn more about the benefits of participating in VPS, watch this video where a student and a faculty member share their experiences about the program and visit the VPS faculty page for further information at https://education.agu.org/virtual-poster-showcase/information-for-faculty/.

Online abstract submissions close: September 30, 2017

Presentation of results is an essential career skill to practice and develop, in or out of Earth and space sciences, and VPS is a cost-effective way to accomplish this for students who cannot attend a scientific conference. By participating in this program, students can achieve international recognition for their research.

HOW STUDENTS CAN PARTICIPATE

Don't have students ready to take part now? Make plans to incorporate the Virtual Poster Showcase into a course, research, or capstone experience. Learn more about available accommodations for students with hearing disabilities. For more information, please contact Pranoti Asher (pasher@agu.org).
