2. Next NGSS Webinar - May 11, 2017

The American Geosciences Institute's Center for Geoscience and Society and NAGT are collaborating with other organizations and member societies to support implementation of the Earth and space science Next Generation Science Standards. Join us for our final webinar of the program year!

NGSS Across the Sciences Curriculum

Thursday, May 11, 2017
1:00 PM Pacific | 2:00 PM Mountain | 3:00 PM Central | 4:00 PM Eastern

The Next Generation Science Standards focuses on four domains of disciplinary core ideas: the Earth and space sciences; physical sciences; life sciences; and engineering, technology and applications of science. Storylines around topics and bundles of performance expectations are created as curricular units are developed. These cut across the disciplinary core idea domains in many cases. In this webinar we will hear from three organizations working to provide resources that support comprehensive implementation of NGSS: Jo Ellen Roseman will introduce curricula developed through AAAS Project 2061; James Kessler will introduce the American Chemical Society middle school chemistry resource; and Aleeza Oshry will introduce a planning guide for implementation developed through her work at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Presenters:

Dr. Jo Ellen Roseman, AAAS, American Association for the Advancement of Science
Dr. James Kessler, ACS, American Chemical Society
Dr. Aleeza Oshry, Science Education Fellow, Howard Hughes Medical Institute

Registration deadline: May 9

3. Final Call for OEST Nominations

The final deadline for the Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Awards is May 15th. The sections still accepting nominations are: New England, Southwest, and Texas.

To make a nomination (including for yourself), just complete the Online Nomination Form.

4. New NAGT Blog: Serving Our Communities

From local communities to international efforts, education and geoscience both play important roles in our society. The Serving our Communities initiative celebrates the ways that educators and students are engaging with local, national and global communities and supports expansion of these efforts.

We invite geoscience educators of all types to contribute their stories that the rest of us my be inspired and learn from you.

5. Opportunity for 2YC Faculty who Teach in the Geosciences

Are you and your two-year college geoscience (broadly defined) faculty colleagues interested in improving the success of your students, enhancing your teaching, strengthening your geoscience program, and working with other geoscience educators in 2YCs? If so, please consider applying to be a SAGE 2YC Change Agent.

This opportunity, funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, will provide your team with skills to implement high-impact, evidence-based instructional and co-curricular practices that will lead to improved student learning, broadened participation, and a more robust geoscience workforce.
For details see http://serc.carleton.edu/sage2yc/cohort2.html.
The application for Cohort 2 Change Agent teams is due by May 31, 2017. Selected teams will be notified by June 15.

We will hold a webinar for faculty interested in applying for this opportunity on May 19, 2017 at noon PST / 1pm MDT / 2pm CDT / 3pm EDT. We'll also post a screen cast of the webinar after the event. You can register for this webinar at http://serc.carleton.edu/sage2yc/cohort2webinar.html by May 17.

You can also contact one of the SAGE 2YC project team with questions:

Please help us publicize our program by forwarding this information to others who might be interested as well.

6. InTeGrate Announces New Teaching Module

Changing Biosphere is a 2-week module that addresses macroevolution and extinction from an interdisciplinary perspective. This module is based on an Earth systems approach in which students become familiar with fundamental geological and biological concepts while exploring critical linkages and feedbacks among Earth's major spheres (geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere). By studying a series of historical and current examples of the interconnections between organisms and their environments, students will be able to discuss the dynamic and evolving nature of ecosystems, explain the relationship between diversity and stability, and analyze the concept of ecosystem health in a changing world. Changing Biosphere is a great fit for courses in biology, environmental studies, environmental science, Earth science, and historical geology.

7. Submit Your Teaching Activities for Peer Review

NAGT is actively soliciting community members to submit teaching activities for our online education portal Teach the Earth. Teach the Earth supports teaching and learning about the Earth by providing online resources for educators in the geosciences and related fields. Resources include classroom activities, course descriptions and syllabi, information about pedagogical strategies, topical collections, and more. This collection of teaching materials already encompasses over 4000 activities across Earth-related disciplines.

To add your contribution to this important community resource, just use the Contribute an Activity Form on the Teach the Earth website.

Activities are welcome at any time but those that are submitted to the portal by June 1 will be included in the Activity Review Camp taking place at the 2017 Earth Educators' Rendezvous in July. You can learn more about the Peer Review Process at the On the Cutting Edge website.

8. AGU/AGI Webinar: How the New Administration's Budget Impacts the Geosciences

Join AGU and AGI policy staff to learn and discuss the details of the new administration's budget and what it means for the geosciences. Join panelists Lexi Shultz (AGU public affairs director), Maeve Boland (AGI director of geoscience policy), Elizabeth Landau (AGU public affairs manager), and others on Friday, 12 May 2017, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time (ET).

9. 2017 STEM for All Video Showcase

The 2017 STEM for All Video Showcase will take place online at http://stemforall2017.videohall.com - May 15th to May 22nd. This virtual interactive event will feature approximately 170 videos of federally funded projects aimed at improving science, technology, mathematics, engineering and computer science in formal and informal environments. They span the range of innovation in elementary school to graduate education. Many address broadening participation and increasing access to high quality STEM experiences in formal and informal environments.

We invite and encourage you to view videos of interest, discuss them online with the presenters, and to vote for your favorites. The videos, discussions and voting will be "live" starting May 15th. This is a great opportunity to network, find new resources, potential collaborators, and to share expertise.

Anytime during this week-long virtual event, visitors can:

  • Locate videos of interest by grade level, keyword, or state
  • Engage in online conversations with the presenters
  • Suggest how their own work, expertise and experience might connect with that of the presenters
  • Provide questions, comments and feedback
  • Share the site with their collegial and social media networks
  • Vote for their favorite videos through facebook, twitter, or onsite.

You can find out more information on the event at http://stemforall2017.videohall.com.

If you have any questions about the event or suggestions for how we can encourage the public to join in on the conversation, please don't hesitate to contact me.

11. CCEP 2017 Effective Practices Webinar Series

The Climate Change Education Partnership (CCEP) Alliance invites you to participate in the 2017 Effective Practices Webinar Series.

This series of four webinars will compliment the newly released Climate Change Education: Effective Practices for Working with Educators, Scientists, Decision Makers, and the Public guide.

Produced by the CCEP Alliance, this guide provides recommendations for effective education and communication practices when working with different types of audiences. While effective education has been traditionally defined as the acquisition of knowledge, Alliance programs maintain a broader definition of "effective" to include the acquisition and use of climate change knowledge to inform decision-making.

You can register for one or more of the webinars in this series. Once registered, information on how to connect to the webinars will be sent within a week of scheduled webinar.

More information can be found on the CCEP Alliance website, http://www.ccepalliance.org.
