A Career Path for African-American Students from HBCUs to National Laboratories, Stony Brook University

Context

This M. S. in Geosciences Instrumentation operates within the graduate programs of the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook, which include several M.S. tracks and Ph. D. track.

Keys to Success

  • Attract new students: Exploit long-standing contacts with Delaware State University and contacts generated by attendance at INCREASE meetings at BNL.
  • Supporting our Majors: All students in the MS Geosciences Instrumentation program have been fully supported by funds from the National Science Foundation, the Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Graduate School of Stony Brook University, as well as traineeships provided by the Center for Inclusive Education at Stony Brook via their NSF-funded Bridge to the Doctorate Program.
  • Preparing Students for Careers: The goal of this diversity program is to provide these student trainees with a marketable skill set in the emerging field between science and technology. As one example, we are committed to preparing these student trainees for employment as Science Associates in national user facilities of the U. S. Department of Energy [DOE], such as the National Synchrotron Light Source [NSLS] at the Brookhaven National Laboratory [BNL].
