Kastens and Manduca's (2012) concept maps of spatial and temporal thinking in the geosciences may serve as a starting point for an important next step in research: creating a map of the various kinds of spatial and temporal reasoning skills and the geoscience specialties that rely on these skills. For example, being able to apply the principle of superposition to a rock outcrop is a specific skill that could be mapped onto the sequence type of temporal thinking.
