Top left: SEM image of a MnS inclusion obtained with a PHI 700 Xi field emission scanning Auger nanoprobe. The whole field of view (FOV) of the image is 1 mm. The round particle in the image is silica left behind from polishing. The yellow rectangle is the area from which the Auger spectrum shown on the right was obtained. Elemental composition is listed. Notice that the Cu and Mn surface concentrations are comparable, even though the EDX obtained from the same area (Fig. 2) shows no evidence of Cu. Lower panel: from left to right, the Auger elemental maps of Fe, Mn, S, Cu and Si.
