Wave ogives on the Vaughn Lewis Glacier, Juneau Icefield, Alaska. Wave ogives are striking features that form within and below icefalls. The phenomenon reflects the passage of alternating zones of thinner summer ice over the icefall when wastage of the glacier is at its greatest. Ogives can be traced well down glaciers, sometimes nearly to the terminus as show here. The wavelength represents a year's motion, thereby providing ice velocity. Wavelength typically decreases down glacier because velocity decreases.
